Indians Are No Longer The Great White Father's Children

One Man’s Opinion –Submitted By Ken Hughes

My remarks don't apply to all Indians. They do apply to far too many.

In the mid to late 1800s, the Whiteman took the Indian from his native environment and relocated them to reservations. Often far from their original territories, Indian culture is a learned experience, learned from their observation of the animals. Only recently in the past [500 years] has the Indian been forced to give in to the culture of the Whiteman. Once again, they were forced to learn by observing, now it was the Whiteman they were forced to observe.

The Whiteman's government established Indian schools in the 1930s, They took Indian children from their homes to warehouse them in all Indian schools. It was done to educate the Indian children to become like the white boys and girls, in the end all it accomplished was a lot of pissed-off Indians.

Now the Whiteman wants to know where the profits from the Indian Casinos go. First, it's really none of the Whiteman's concern. The Indian learned to how to be corrupt from the Whiteman. I've no proof, I'm sure there's some skimming going on by Tribal Council Members. I know the Tribal Council bribes Washington Politicians with campaign contributions. I'm sure some of the money goes to the members of the Tribes. Although I'm not sure the Whiteman's “touch-feely” programs fit Indian culture all that well.

Because the people who patronize Indian Casinos rarely leave with more than a Tee-shirt that says “ I've Been Screwed By An Indian“. Everyone believes casino revenues are all profit for the Indians. Most Indians are lucky to get a janitorial job in an Indian Casino. The same Corporations who operate all gambling in the country operate the Indian Casinos, There are very few exceptions.

The Whiteman established in their treaties of the late 1800s all Indians be delegated to sitting in front of the gates of the Forts selling beaded buckskin trinkets. That would be their destiny from then on. Times have changed but not for the Indian. The only change for the Indian is now the beaded buckskin trinkets comes from China and the Indians still sit in front of the Gates of the Fort empty handed.

The Whiteman doesn't seem to get it. The Indian is on the way back to ruling over his own destiny. The Whiteman stole a continent from the Indian, now when the Indian finally finds a way to get some of it back they are accused of all sorts of indiscretion, conspiring against the Whiteman.

I say to the Indians – ”get all you can while you can”. The Whiteman will find a way to take this from you like all the other things they've taken.
